Accitania is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. Very close to Benalúa – although in the municipality of Fonelas – are the sites of Solana del Zamborino (Palaeolithic) and Cerro del Gallo (Argaric culture) where fossil remains of animals hunted by the Palaeolithic settlers have been found, together with lithic industry, as well as remains of pottery and Argaric copper tools, respectively. Some historians place the Iberian and Roman settlement of Acci near Benalúa, but the remains found place it in present-day Guadix, with Benalúa having its origin in the indigenous population inserted in that dispersed settlement that must have been the pre-Roman Acci, in which the Iberian settlements crowned the hills of the region near the Vega and the mining basin of the Marquesado del Zenete. When Acci was founded in the 1st century, Benalúa was a scattered settlement organised longitudinally along one of the branches of the Via Herculea.
